On the Threshold

These photographs consider interface areas in Belfast. An interface is a Northern Irish term referring to a boundary between Catholic (Nationalist) and Protestant (Unionist) areas. Sometimes these divisions are marked by walls dividing communities, at other times they are invisible. These areas were some of the worst battlegrounds during the thirty-year conflict and, ten years after the peace process, they remain the most violent areas in Northern Ireland. The regeneration process aims to neutralise these territorial locations. This project considers the possibilities of creating neutral spaces in locations loaded with a recent history.
